The book tells the story of Dunk, a young man from the Seven Kingdoms who dreams of becoming a knight. When he meets the elderly knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, he is given the opportunity to fulfill his dream.
Dunk and his squire, Egg, travel with Ser Arlan to King’s Landing, where they witness the outbreak of war between the Targaryen queen and her brother, King Robert Baratheon. They join forces with Ser Arlan’s nephew, Lord Jon Connington, and help him fight against the Targaryen forces. After the war, Dunk returns to his home in the Seven Kingdoms, where he eventually becomes a knight himself.

About the Author
George R. R. Martin is an American novelist and short story writer in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres, screenwriter, and television producer. He is best known for his internationally bestselling series of epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into the HBO dramatic series Game of Thrones (2011–2019).
In 2005, Lev Grossman of Time called Martin “the American Tolkien”, and in 2011, he was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Martin attended Marymount Manhattan College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. After working as a journalist for over a decade, including a stint as editor-in-chief of the now-defunct monthly Amazing Stories, he began writing fiction full-time. In the early 1970s, Martin wrote The Phage and The Second Game for Wild Cards, a shared universe superhero anthology series edited by his friend Melinda Snodgrass.
He also wrote some of the most memorable tales in the series, including “Busted Flush” and “Shell Games”. His work for Wild Cards attracted the attention of editor Ben Bova, who purchased Martin’s story “A Temptation of Angels” for Analog Science Fiction and Fact.
