About the Author
Nicholas Sparks is an American novelist, screenwriter, and producer. He has published twenty novels and two non-fiction books. Several of his novels have been adapted into films, including Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, The Last Song, The Lucky One, Safe Haven, and most recently The Longest Ride.
Sparks was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska to Patrick Michael Sparks, a professor of business administration at the University of Notre Dame, and Jill Emma Marie (née Thoene), a homemaker and an optometrist’s assistant. He was the middle of three children, with an older brother, Michael Earl Sparks, and a younger sister, Danielle Dana Sparks. He was raised Catholic and is of German, Czech, English, and Irish descent.
Sparks attended the Roman Catholic Notre Dame Academy in Wichita, Kansas on scholarship and graduated in 1984. He received a full-track scholarship at the University of Notre Dame but dropped out in his sophomore year in order to pursue writing. He is a member of the class of 1988.
Sparks has said that his Catholic faith has influenced his work. “My novels are about love and hope, and all of those things that we’re brought up believing in.”
