About the Author
Ursula K. Le Guin is an American author of novels, children’s books, and short stories, mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction. She has won multiple Nebula and Hugo Awards. In 2014, she was awarded the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Le Guin was born Ursula Kroeber in Berkeley, California, on October 21, 1929. Her father Alfred Louis Kroeber was an anthropologist at the University of California, Berkeley. Her mother Theodora Kracaw (née Covel) was a writer. Le Guin has said she “inherited” her parents’ love of storytelling and wrote her first story at age 11.
She also began writing poetry at a young age. When she was nine years old, her great-aunt Mary Barnard started teaching her Latin, French, and classical literature; as a result, Le Guin became “fluent” in these languages. The family spent several summers in Napa Valley, where they had relatives on her father’s side of the family. While in high school, she became interested in anthropology, which would become a significant influence on her later writing.
At age 15, she started attending Berkeley High School. During this time, she met Charles Platt, who introduced her to science fiction and fantasy; soon after, she began writing stories and poetry of her own.
