Altered Carbon Summary
Altered Carbon is a science fiction novel by Richard K. Morgan, first published in 2002. The book takes place in the far future of a interstellar society where technology has advanced to the point that human consciousness can be digitized and stored in a disk-shaped device called a cortical stack, which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. People can be resurrected in new bodies, known as sleeves, after death, so long as their stack remains intact.
The story follows Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite soldier who was killed and then brought back to life in a new sleeve by an extremely wealthy man named Laurens Bancroft. Bancroft offers Kovacs a chance at resurrection in exchange for solving his own murder. With the help of a former cop-turned-PI, Kristin Ortega, Kovacs sets out to find who killed Bancroft and why.
Kovacs soon discovers that he is caught up in something much bigger than a single murder. A powerful AI, Quellcrist Falconer, is gathering an army of revolutionaries to overthrow the current interstellar regime, and Kovacs finds himself at the center of their struggle. In order to protect his own sleeve and uncover the truth behind Bancroft’s death, he must make allies with both sides of the conflict.
