Ifemelu adjusts to life in the United States but struggles with her sense of identity as a black woman. She starts a blog called “Raceteenth or Various Observations About American Blacks (Those Formerly Known as Negroes) by a Non-American Black”, which becomes popular.

Meanwhile, Obinze illegally immigrates to the United Kingdom, where he struggles to find work and maintain his relationship with Ifemelu. The two eventually reconnect and rekindle their relationship.

Americanah ends with Ifemelu and Obinze’s wedding in Nigeria.

About the Author

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian writer and novelist. She was born in 1977 in Enugu, Nigeria, and grew up in the city of Aba.

Americanah

Adichie attended secondary school at the all-girls’ Starlight Secondary School before moving to the United States to attend Drexel University on a full scholarship.

Adichie graduated from Drexel University with a degree in communication and political science. She then attended Yale University, where she earned an MFA in fiction writing.

Adichie’s first novel, Purple Hibiscus, was published in 2003 to critical acclaim. Her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, was published in 2006 and won the Orange Prize for Fiction. Adichie’s third novel, Americanah, was published in 2013 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.

Adichie has also written several short stories, which have been published in various magazines and anthologies. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the MacArthur Genius Grant, and she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2015.
