About the Author
George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, a British writer born in India in 1903. Orwell served with the Imperial Police in Burma before joining the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. His experience in these conflicts deeply affected his views on socialism and totalitarianism, which he would later explore in his writing.
His writing career began in 1928 with the publication of two collections of essays, but it was his first novel, Burmese Days, that brought him critical success. This was followed by A Clergyman’s Daughter and Keep the Aspidistra Flying. In 1935, Orwell went to live on a farm in Hertfordshire, England, where he wrote his famous political allegory, Animal Farm.
The book was published in 1945, just as World War II was coming to an end. Orwell’s last novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, was published in 1949 and is considered one of the most important works of literature of the 20th century. Orwell died of tuberculosis in 1950 at the age of 46.
