Call Me by Your Name Summary
The book starts in the summer of 1983, in the small town of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy. Seventeen-year-old Elio Perlman is spending his days reading, playing classical piano, and flirting with local girls. One day, Oliver, a 24-year-old graduate student from America arrives to stay with Elio’s family for the summer to help Elio’s father, a professor of archaeology.
At first, Elio is annoyed by Oliver’s presence, but he soon starts to spend more time with him. They go on bike rides and swim in the river together. One day, they end up kissing and sleeping together. However, Oliver tells Elio that they can’t be more than friends because he is gay and Elio is straight.
Elio doesn’t understand his feelings at first, but he soon realizes that he is in love with Oliver. He starts to act cold towards him and even tells Oliver’s girlfriend about their relationship in an attempt to make him jealous.
Oliver eventually realizes that he loves Elio too and they spend the rest of the summer in a passionate relationship. However, they both know that their time together is only temporary and they will have to go their separate ways at the end of the summer.
