About the Author
Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American writer and cartoonist best known for his children’s books. He published more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Many of his books have been adapted into films, television shows, and stage productions.
Geisel was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Henrietta (née Seuss) and Theodor Robert Geisel. He had an older sister, Marnie. His mother encouraged his love of reading and provided him with frequent reading material. His father, who was of German descent, eventually became superintendent of Springfield’s parks.
Geisel attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1925. He subsequently worked for an advertising agency in New York City before moving to Hollywood to pursue a career in filmmaking. He met his future wife, Helen Palmer while working on an advertisement for Flit insecticide.
His work includes some of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death.
