Kafka on the Shore Summary
The book starts with a fifteen-year-old boy, Kafka Tamura, running away from home. He is tired of his father, a famous sculptor who only wants him to be a carbon copy of himself. Kafka leaves Tokyo and heads to the small town of Takamatsu in Shikoku. There, he hopes to find his mother, whom he has never met, and who may or may not be dead.
On the first night of his journey, Kafka meets a talkingcrow who tells him that he will meet two women: one who is blessed and one who is cursed. The crow also tells Kafka that he must choose between these two women, and that his decision will determine the course of his life.
Kafka eventually arrives in Takamatsu, where he gets a job at a library. He befriends the owner, Oshima, and Oshima’s girlfriend, Miss Saeki. Miss Saeki is a beautiful woman who is kind to Kafka, and he falls in love with her. However, he knows that he can never have her, as she is much too old for him.
