About the Author
James W. Loewen is an American sociologist, historian, and author, best known for his 1995 book Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong. The book was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and has sold over two million copies.
Loewen has also written extensively on race relations in the United States. He is a member of the Scholars Strategy Network.
Loewen was born in Decatur, Illinois, to James Lawler Loewen (1917-2007), an insurance salesman, and Ruth Weaver Loewen (1921-1996). He grew up in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. He graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1959. Loewen attended Carleton College, graduating with a B.A. in sociology in 1963. He then studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned an M.A. in sociology in 1965 and a Ph.D. in 1967.
Loewen began his teaching career as an assistant professor of sociology at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. He then taught at Concordia University Wisconsin from 1968 to 1972. In 1972, he joined the faculty of the University of Vermont, where he taught until 2007. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Sociology at the Catholic University of America.
Loewen is married to Dorothy Brown Loewen, a retired professor of education at the University of Vermont. They have two sons, Christopher and Timothy.
