About the Author
Lois Lowry is an American writer credited with more than thirty children’s books. She has won two Newbery Medals, for Number the Stars and The Giver. Her first novel, A Summer to Die, was published in 1977. She was born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, 1937, in Hawaii.
Her parents were both educators; her father was a principal and her mother was a teacher and reading specialist. The family moved around frequently during Lowry’s childhood, living in such places as Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, and Japan.
Lowry began her writing career while working as a freelance journalist. She was first published in 1957 when she sold an article to Seventeen magazine. Her first children’s book, A Summer to Die, was published in 1977. The novel follows the story of a teenage girl named Meg and her family as they deal with Meg’s sister’s terminal illness.
While many of Lowry’s early books were well-received, it was not until Number the Stars that she achieved widespread critical and commercial success. The novel, set during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, tells the story of a young Jewish girl named Annemarie who helps her friend Ellen escape to Sweden.
