Rot & Ruin Summary
The story is centered around a fifteen-year-old boy named Benny Imura who lives in a fenced-in settlement with his older brother Tom. Benny has always resented Tom for leaving him and their parents to join the military and becoming a famous zombie hunter, leaving Benny to work in his family’s food shop.
One day, Benny’s best friend Chong suggests they venture out of the settlement and explore the world beyond. Along the way, they meet a group of zombie hunters who call themselves the “Lost Girl’s Colony.” The group is led by a woman named Lilah, who teaches Benny and Chong the skills they need to become zombie hunters.
As Benny and Chong start to learn about the reality of the world outside their settlement, they also begin to understand the complexities of life and death. They witness the loss of friends and family, and they confront the moral dilemmas that arise in a world where the dead have risen.
Benny’s relationship with his brother Tom also starts to change as he learns more about Tom’s past and the reasons why he left their family. Benny comes to understand and appreciate Tom’s strength and bravery in fighting against the zombies.
