The Autobiography of Malcolm X Summary

The book starts with a brief history of Malcolm’s family. His great-grandfather, Jim Little, was a slave who bought his freedom and eventually owned a large farm in Georgia. Jim’s son, Eli, was also a successful farmer, but he lost everything in the economic downturn following the Civil War. Eli moved his family north to Michigan, where he found work as a janitor.

Malcolm’s father, Earl Little, was born in Michigan. Earl was a passionate advocate for black empowerment and was active in the early days of the Nation of Islam. He was also an outspoken critic of white racism, which made him a target for white supremacists. In 1931, when Malcolm was six years old, Earl was killed by white supremacists.

After Earl’s death, the family fell into poverty and Malcolm’s mother was committed to a mental hospital. Malcolm and his siblings were sent to different foster homes. As a teenager, Malcolm moved to Boston, where he became involved in petty crime. In 1946, he was arrested for burglary and sentenced to ten years in prison.
