About the Author
Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterêts, France. He was the third child of general Napoleon Bonaparte’s famous general Alexandre Dumas and his Creole wife Marie-Louise Labouret.
His father died when he was four, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister. Alexandre Dumas was educated at the Lycee Impérial in Villers-Cotterêts. From 1815 to 1824, he studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris.
In 1822, Dumas’s first play, Henry III and His Courts was produced. The following year, his second play, Christine, was also staged. These early works were not well received by the public or critics.
Dumas’s first real success came with the publication of La Dame aux camélias (The Lady of the Camellias) in 1848. This novel was adapted into a play, which was very popular in Paris. It was also made into a popular opera by Giuseppe Verdi.
