About the Author
Douglas Adams was an English writer, humorist, and dramatist. He is best known as the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which started life as a BBC Radio comedy before developing into a “trilogy” of five books that sold more than fifteen million copies in his lifetime.
Adams also wrote Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988), and co-wrote The Meaning of Liff (1983), The Deeper Meaning of Liff (1990), Last Chance to See (1990), and Doctor Who – Shada (1979). A posthumous collection of his work, including an unfinished novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002.
Adams was an advocate for environmental causes and animal rights, and a lover of fast cars, cameras, classical music, and the Macintosh computer. He was a committed atheist.
Adams died on 11 May 2001 at age 49 from a heart attack brought on by arteriosclerosis and hypertension. He had stopped smoking several years earlier, but the effects of his lifelong smoking habit resulted in heart problems that eventually took his life.
