About the Author
Sandra Cisneros is a Mexican-American author best known for her 1984 novel The House on Mango Street. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cisneros is the only daughter of a Mexican father and a Mexican-American mother.
She was raised in Chicago’s Hispanic community and attended Catholic schools.
Cisneros began writing at a young age and was encouraged by her teachers to pursue a career in writing. After high school, she attended the University of Iowa, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. She then went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts at the University of California, Irvine.
Cisneros’ other works include the novels Woman Hollering Creek and Caramelo, as well as the short story collections The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek. She has also published several poetry collections, including Loose Woman and My Wicked, Wicked Ways.
