About the Author
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer, pilot, and journalist. He is best known for his novella The Little Prince, which has been translated into more than 250 languages and sold more than 140 million copies worldwide.
Saint-Exupéry was born in Lyon, France on June 29, 1900. He was the second of five children. His father, François de Saint-Exupéry, was an aristocrat and his mother, Marie de Fonckenbeek, came from a wealthy Belgian family.
Saint-Exupéry attended a Jesuit boarding school in Switzerland and then studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He did not finish his studies and instead began working as a journalist for various newspapers.
In 1926, Saint-Exupéry got his pilot’s license and began working for Air France. He flew mail routes across Africa and South America. His experiences as a pilot inspired him to write several books about flying, including Night Flight (1931) and Wind, Sand, and Stars (1939).
Saint-Exupéry joined the French Air Force at the outbreak of World War II. He flew reconnaissance missions over Germany and was shot down in July 1944. His plane disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea and he was presumed dead.
