Quentin Coldwater is a high school senior from Brooklyn who has been obsessed with the Fillory and Further series, a set of children’s fantasy novels about the magical land of Fillory since he was nine years old. When he is unexpectedly accepted to attend Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, Quentin finally gets to experience the magic he has always read about. However, he quickly discovers that the magical world is not as perfect as he imagined it would be.
At Brakebills, Quentin makes friends with fellow students Eliot Waugh, Janet Pluchinsky, and Alice Quinn. He also meets his roommate, Penny Adiyodi, who comes from a family of magicians. Quentin quickly falls in love with Alice, who is also a skilled magician.
The group soon discovers that the magical world is under attack by an evil force known as the Beast. They must work together to stop the Beast before it destroys all of magic.

Lev Grossman was born in 1969 and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. He is the author of the novels The Magicians, The Magician King, and The Magician’s Land. He is also a book critic for Time magazine.
