About the Author
Oliver Sacks was born on July 9, 1933, in London, England. He was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, where he qualified as a neurologist in 1958.
After working for several years in the National Health Service in England, he moved to the United States in 1960 and took up a post at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Columbia University.
Sacks is the author of more than a dozen books on topics ranging from medical case histories to accounts of his own experiences as a physician. His best-known work is The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1985), a collection of case histories of patients with unusual neurological disorders. Other notable works include Awakenings (1973), in which he recounts his experiences working with patients who had been suffering from encephalitis lethargica.
Sacks have received numerous awards and honors, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Anisfield-Wolf Book Award (1991) and a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” (2007). He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008.
