About the Author
Albert Camus was a French writer, philosopher, and journalist. His views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism. He wrote in his essay “The Rebel” that his whole life was devoted to opposing the philosophy of nihilism while still delving deeply into individual freedom.
In 1949, Camus founded the Group for International Liaisons within the Revolutionary Union Movement, which was opposed to some tendencies of the Communist Party of France. Camus also wrote novels, plays, and essays.
His work is often seen as a response to existentialism. In the novel The Stranger, the main character Meursault is an indifferent French Algerian, who seemingly cares about little else besides physical sensations and his own happiness. The novel has been described as “a study of the absurd and of man’s reaction to the absurd.”
In 1948, Camus founded the monthly publication Combat, which became a newspaper the following year. In it, he wrote numerous articles calling for social reform and denouncing both anti-colonialism and communism.
