The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of a young white girl, Lily Owens, who is haunted by the memory of her mother’s death. Lily’s father, T. Ray, is a mean and abusive man who makes Lily’s life a living hell. In an effort to escape her father’s cruelty, Lily runs away from home with her black housekeeper, Rosaleen.
Lily and Rosaleen end up in the town of Tiburon, South Carolina where they meet a group of black women who are beekeepers. The women take Lily and Rosaleen in and teach them about the importance of bees and honey. The women also tell Lily about her mother and the secrets she kept from T. Ray.

About the Author
Sue Monk Kidd is an American author who was born in 1948 in Sylvester, Georgia. She is best known for her debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees. Kidd’s other novels include The Mermaid Chair, The Invention of Wings, and The Book of Longings.
Kidd grew up in a small town in Georgia and was the eldest of three girls. Her father was a Baptist minister and her mother was a homemaker. Kidd attended Texas Christian University and graduated with a degree in nursing.
After college, Kidd worked as a journalist for The Miami Herald. She married Sandy Monk in 1969 and the couple had two daughters. In the mid-1970s, Kidd experienced a religious conversion and became a born-again Christian.
Kidd’s other novels include The Mermaid Chair, The Invention of Wings, and The Book of Longings. Sue Monk Kidd is a gifted storyteller with a deep understanding of the human heart. Her novels are must-reads for anyone who loves a good story.
