The Silmarillion Summary
The book contains five parts: the Ainulindalë, Valaquenta, Quenta Silmarillion, Akallabêth, and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age. The Ainulindalë is a cosmogony, Valaquenta an overview of the Valar and Maiar, Quenta Silmarillion the history of the First Age, Akallabêth the ruin of Númenor and the scouring of Middle-earth, and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age the events leading up to and including the War of the Ring.
The Ainulindalë recounts the creation of Eä, the world that contains all things. Eru Ilúvatar creates the Ainur, powerful spirits who are the offspring of His thought. The Valaquenta tells of the history and deeds of the Valar, the mightiest of the Ainur who came to Middle-earth to aid in its development.
The Quenta Silmarillion tells of the First Age, beginning with the theft of the Silmarils by Morgoth and ending with his defeat by the Valar. The Akallabêth tells of the Second Age, when Númenor, a land given to Men by the Valar, is destroyed because of the pride of its people. The Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age recounts the events of the Third Age, including the finding of the One Ring by Sauron and the War of the Ring.

About the Author
J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known for his high fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He served as the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature from 1945 to 1959.
He was a close friend of C.S. Lewis—they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Tolkien was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972. After his death, Tolkien’s son Christopher published a series of works based on his father’s extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion.
In an interview with The Times, Tolkien’s son Christopher said that The Silmarillion is “the central work of my father’s life”. It is a collection of five interlinked stories, intended by Tolkien to be a comprehensive history of the fictional world he created, taking in the whole of Middle-earth’s vast chronology.
