The Stranger Summary
The story follows Meursault, a French Algerian who seemed indifferent to life and events around him. Meursault’s passive attitude towards life changes when he kills an Arab man for no apparent reason. Meursault is then put on trial for murder and sentenced to death. The story is a detailed account of his life in prison leading up to his execution.
The book starts with Meursault’s mother dying. Meursault does not show much emotion at her funeral, which puzzles and confounds those around him. He later receives a telegram from his employer and decides to take a break from work to attend his mother’s funeral.
On the way to the funeral, Meursault thinks about whether or not to wire his boss back, but ultimately decides against it. At the funeral itself, he is again unemotional and detached, which strikes those in attendance as odd.
After the funeral, Meursault returns to his normal routine as if nothing has happened. A few days later, he goes to the beach with his friend Raymond and Raymond’s girlfriend Maria. While at the beach, they get into a fight with some Arabs, and Raymond ends up stabbing one of them.

About the Author
Albert Camus was a French philosopher, author, and journalist. His views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism. He wrote in his essay The Rebel that his whole life was devoted to opposing the philosophy of nihilism while still delving deeply into individual freedom.
He was born in Mondovi, Algeria, then a French protectorate, on 7 November 1913. His father was killed in the Battle of the Marne in 1914 during World War I, after which his mother moved to Algiers with her children.
Camus joined the French Communist Party in 1935 but left in 1937 when he denounced Stalinism and the Moscow Trials. In the same year, he wrote The Stranger (L’Étranger), a novel about an emotionally detached man who murders an Arab.
During World War II, Camus was a member of the French Resistance but also criticized the leftist intellectuals who supported Stalinism. In 1942, he published The Myth of Sisyphus, an essay that analyzed the absurdity of existence. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. Camus died in a car accident on 4 January 1960.
