The Tale of Despereaux Summary
The book begins with the birth of a mouse, Despereaux. He is born with oversized ears and an affinity for music and stories. He loves to learn how to read and even risks his life to save Princess Pea from a rat who has invaded her castle.
Along his journey, he meets other characters such as Miggery Sow, a downtrodden servant, and Gregory the rat. Meanwhile, Roscuro, a rat who has been banished from the castle for his crimes against Princess Pea, plots to avenge himself by getting close to the princess.
Despereaux continues his journey in search of true bravery. He eventually faces off with Roscuro in an attempt to protect the princess. He defeats Roscuro and proves himself to be a brave mouse deserving of being knighted.

About the Author
Kate DiCamillo is the author of The Tale of Despereaux. She was born on 25th March 1964 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is an American writer who writes mostly children’s books. In 2003 she won a Newbery Medal for her book “The Tale of Despereaux”.
Kate DiCamillo grew up in Florida and began writing stories when she was young. She wrote her first book, “Because of Winn-Dixie”, in 2000 and it became a huge success. This was followed by various other popular books such as “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” (2006) and “The Tale of Despereaux” (2003).
She studied at the University of Florida, where she received her BA in 1986 and MA in 1988. Afterward, DiCamillo moved to Minneapolis and worked as a bookseller for several years. In between books, she has penned screenplays based on some of her stories including “The Tale of Despereaux” and “Because of Winn-Dixie”.
