About the Author
Harper Lee was born in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She attended elementary and high school there, and then went on to study law at the University of Alabama.
After a year of study, she left college and moved to New York City, where she worked as an airline reservations clerk and then as a writer for Harper’s magazine.
In 1957, Lee began working on what would become her only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The book was published in 1960 and was an instant success, winning the Pulitzer Prize and becoming a bestseller.
Lee continued to live in New York City until her death in 2016. In the years following the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, she was reluctant to talk about her work, and she gave only a few interviews. However, the impact of her novel has continued to be felt all over the world.
In an interview with The Paris Review in 1964, Harper Lee said of To Kill a Mockingbird, “I wanted to write something that would be really entertaining, make people laugh, and it did.” She also said that she hoped the book would offer readers “a sense of hope” in the face of injustice.
