12 Rules for Life Summary
Peterson begins the book with a discussion of the need for order in life. He argues that humans are naturally drawn to chaos, but that this is not a good thing. Too much chaos leads to disorder and chaos eventually destroys order. He goes on to say that a life based on order is a life worth living.
Peterson then discusses the importance of rules. He argues that rules are necessary in order to maintain order. Without rules, chaos will quickly take over. He also argues that rules should not be followed blindly, but should be understood and followed for a reason.
Peterson then goes on to discuss the importance of meaning in life. He argues that humans need something to believe in, something to strive for. Without meaning, life is empty and meaningless.
The next few chapters discuss the importance of relationships. Peterson argues that humans are social animals and need to have strong relationships in order to thrive. He goes on to say that relationships should be based on trust, respect, and love.
The next few chapters discuss the importance of parenting. Peterson argues that parents have a responsibility to their children to raise them well.
