Despite the danger of traveling, Frederick makes his way to Milan. He is able to see Catherine one last time before she dies. After her death, Frederick returns to the front line. The war eventually comes to an end and Frederick is wounded. He returns to America, where he plans to start a new life with a new wife.

Ernest Hemingway was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations.

A Farewell to Arms

Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three of his novels, four short story collections, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature.

Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. His father, Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, was a physician, and his mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, was a musician. Both were well-educated and well-respected in Oak Park, a conservative community about which resident Frank Lloyd Wright said, “So many churches for so many good people to go to.”

Hemingway’s parents met while Grace was at a music camp in northern Michigan. They married in 1896 and shortly thereafter moved to Oak Park. Ernest was the second of six children: three sons and three daughters. All of the Hemingway children were encouraged to pursue their interests and talents.
