About the Author
Virginia Woolf was an English writer, considered one of the most important modernists of the twentieth century. Her works include the novels Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), and The Waves (1931); the book-length essay A Room of One’s Own (1929); and the short story “The Mark on the Wall” (1917). Woolf was a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device and is an important figure in feminist literature.
Woolf was born into an affluent family in London, but her parent’s marriage was not a happy one. Her mother, Julia Stephen, died when Woolf was thirteen. Woolf was subsequently educated by her father and governesses, and she began writing professionally in 1900. Her first novel, The Voyage Out (1915), was published by her half-brother’s publishing house, Hogarth Press.
Woolf came into her own as a writer in the 1920s when she produced a body of work that established her as a key figure in the modernist literary movement. In 1925, she published Mrs. Dalloway, a novel that uses the interior monologues of its characters to explore questions of consciousness and identity.
