About the Author
Brown Girl Dreaming is a 2014 memoir and children’s literature novel written by Jacqueline Woodson and published by Penguin. The novel tells the story of Woodson’s childhood in South Carolina and New York during the 1970s and 1980s.
Woodson was born in Columbus, Ohio, on February 12, 1963. Her father was in the Air Force, and her family moved around often during her childhood. Woodson lived in Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and finally New York City. She attended college at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, now known as Daytona State College.
After a year of community college, she transferred to New York’s Barnard College where she graduated with a degree in English and African American Studies.
Woodson began her career as a poet and writer of children’s books. Her first book, The House You Pass on the Way (1997), was a Coming-of-Age novel about a girl who must grapple with her sexuality and her family’s reaction to it. Woodson has said that the book was semi-autobiographical.
