John Brooks was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 5, 1920. He graduated from Harvard College in 1942. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

He joined The New Yorker in 1955. His work appeared in many anthologies, including The Best of The New Yorker (1974) and The 100 Best Articles and Stories of The New Yorker (1999). He died on July 28, 1993, in North Tarrytown, New York.
