Cinder PDF is a young adult science fiction novel by American author Marissa Meyer, published by Feiwel & Friends in January 2012. It is the first book in The Lunar Chronicles series and is followed by Scarlet. Cinder was nominated for the 2012 Cybil award in Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy category.
The novel tells the story of a cyborg girl, Cinder, who becomes involved with the handsome Prince Kai and must contend with Levana, the evil lunar queen. Cinder was published by Feiwel & Friends on January 3, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. In 2015, a collected paperback edition of The Lunar Chronicles, which included Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, was published.
The novel received positive reviews from critics. Publishers Weekly praised the “well-developed” characters and “fast-paced” plot, and called the book a “promising start to a series that’s sure to be popular with fairy-tale fans as well as followers of dystopian fiction.”
The book starts off with Cinder, a 16-year-old cyborg who lives in New Beijing, being brought to the palace by her stepsister Peony and best friend Iko to fix the emperor’s android. While she is working, Kai, the emperor’s son and heir to the throne comes in and starts talking to her. Cinder is attracted to him, but she is nervous because she is a cyborg and he is a prince.
Cinder’s stepmother, Adri, who is also the emperor’s head advisor, comes in and tells Cinder to leave. As Cinder is leaving, Kai asks her to come back the next day to fix his android. The next day, Cinder comes back and Kai asks her to dinner. Cinder is hesitant at first, but she agrees.
At dinner, they talk about their families and Cinder tells Kai about her mother dying of the plague when she was young and her father remarrying Adri. Kai confides in Cinder that his father is dying of the same plague and that Adri is pushing for him to marry Levana, the princess of Luna. Cinder is horrified because she knows that Levana is actually an evil ruler who kills people for fun.
