About the Author
Julian Lewis is a British biochemist and molecular biologist. He is the author of Essential Cell Biology, a textbook used by students of biology and medicine. Lewis has also authored several research papers on topics such as the structure and function of DNA, RNA, and proteins. He is currently a professor at the University of Oxford.
He was born in London, England, in 1953. Lewis earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. After postdoctoral research at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, he joined the faculty of the University of Oxford in 1980.
Lewis is a member of the UK Medical Research Council’s Molecular and Cellular Biology Board and the European Molecular Biology Organization. He has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including Nature, Cell, and The EMBO Journal.
Lewis was awarded the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday Prize in 1992 and the Gairdner Foundation International Award in 2000. In 2008, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
