Flow Summary
Flow is a book about the psychology of optimal experience. The author, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, defines flow as “the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.”
Csikszentmihalyi identifies several conditions that are necessary for flow to occur: There must be a clear objective or goal. The task must be challenging, but not so challenging that it is overwhelming. There must be a clear feedback loop so that the individual knows how they are progressing. There must be a sense of control over the situation. The individual must be fully immersed in the experience.
Flow is often described as being “in the zone” or “in the groove.” When in a state of flow, individuals report feeling a sense of joy, happiness, creativity, and a deep connection to whatever it is they are doing. They also report feeling a sense of time slowing down or even stopping altogether.
