About the Author
Mark Z. Danielewski (born March 3, 1966) is an American fiction author who writes horror novels. His debut novel House of Leaves (2000), about a family whose house is revealed to be infinitely larger on the inside than the outside, became a bestseller and has been translated into multiple languages.
Danielewski was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Polish director Tad Danielewski and Russian actress Elżbieta Dąbrowska. He has two sisters, Anastasia Danielewski and Dominique Zdanielewski. Danielewski graduated from Harvard University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.
Danielewski’s work is characterized by formal experimentation, and intricate layouts, and frequently incorporates multimedia elements. His typographical experimentation includes novels entirely composed of footnotes (Only Revolutions, 2006), and books with first-person narrators who are either unreliable or gradually reveal themselves to be so (The Fifty Year Sword, 2012).
