About the Author

Sudha Murty is an Indian writer in English and a social worker. She is the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and a member of public charities such as Karnataka Health Promotion Trust and South India Regional Council.

How I Taught My Grand Mother To Read

Murty was born in Shiggaon, Haveri district, Karnataka. After she completed her M.E. in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1976, she married N.R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys. Sudha Murty has written books mainly in the genres of fiction, non-fiction, and children’s literature. Her best-known work is How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories, a collection of short stories about the lives of ordinary people in India.

In 2003, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions to literature and social work. In 2011, she received the Sahitya Akademi Award for her book Old Man and His God: Selected Stories. She has also been conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of Mysore and by the Mangalore University.

Murty is known for her philanthropic work. She has set up two engineering colleges, one each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which provide free education to economically backward students.
