Howl’s Moving Castle Summary
The book starts with Sophie, a hat maker, who is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and turned into an old woman. She goes on an adventure to break the curse and along the way meets Howl, a wizard who lives in a moving castle.
As the story progress, it is revealed that Calcifer, the fire demon who powers the castle, made a deal with Howl long ago- if Howl can find true love then Calcifer will be freed. However, as he has not been able to do so, Calcifer is stuck with Howl.
Sophie eventually breaks the curse and turns back into a young woman. It is also revealed that the Witch of the Waste was after Howl because he took her apprentice away from her. Sophie, Calcifer, and Howl defeat the Witch of the Waste, and Sophie and Howl end up falling in love with each other.

About the Author
Diana Wynne Jones was a British writer of fantasy novels for children and adults. Many of her books have been published in multiple languages, including Howl’s Moving Castle.
Diana Wynne Jones was born in London in 1934. Her father was Richard Aneurin Jones, a journalist, and radio producer, and her mother was Marjorie, a schoolteacher. She had two younger sisters, Ellen and Ursula. The family moved to Essex when Diana was four, and later to Thaxted, where her father worked as a headmaster.
Diana was educated at Thaxted County Primary School, Saffron Walden County High School, and St Anne’s College, Oxford. She began writing stories when she was seven years old and had her first story published when she was ten. After graduating from Oxford, she worked as a journalist and teacher.
Diana married John Burke in 1957, and they had four children: Richard, Anthony, Michael, and Sarah. The family moved to Wales in the 1960s, first to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll on Anglesey, and then to Aberystwyth.
