About the Author

Karl Ulrich and Steven D. Eppinger are the authors of the Product Design and Development book. Karl Ulrich is a Professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches classes on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Product Design and Development

He also serves as Vice-Dean for Innovation, the Chairman of Operations, Information and Decisions Department, the co-director for Wharton’s Mack Center for Technological Innovation, and the co-director of Wharton’s SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University and a Master’s degree and Doctoral degree in Operations Research from Stanford University.

Steven D. Eppinger is an industrial engineer, who serves as the General Motors Leader for Global Product Development and Chief Engineer, at MIT System Design and Management. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Harvard University, a Master’s degree, and a Doctoral degree in Management from MIT Sloan School of Management.

The two authors have co-written several books together, including “Design Structure Matrix Methods and Applications”, “Product Design and Development”, and “Design Thinking and Creativity at Work”.
