Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World PDF is a book by David Epstein published in 2019 by Random House. The book introduces the idea that in many fields, from sports to business to medicine, “range” – the ability to try different things and learn from varied experiences – is more important than “depth” – the focus on a single skill.
The book has received positive reviews, with The Economist praising it as “a thought-provoking book”, and Publishers Weekly calling it “original, insightful, and often surprising”. As of 2019, the book had sold over 300,000 copies.
The book has been praised for its insights into the benefits of a diverse range of experiences. Critics have noted that the book’s argument is supported by data and research, but some have critiqued the book for overstating the importance of range. Range is available in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook formats.

Range Summary
The book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World is about the benefits of being a “generalist” instead of a “specialist.” The author, David Epstein, argues that the world is becoming increasingly complex and that specialists are less able to adapt to change than generalists. He cites examples from a variety of fields, including sports, business, and science.
Epstein begins by discussing the history of specialization. He notes that while the Industrial Revolution led to increased specialization in the workplace, it also created a need for generalists who could oversee the work of specialists. In the early 20th century, the rise of mass production led to increased specialization in the workforce, and generalists became less common.
However, Epstein argues that the world is now changing again and that we are moving towards a “new era of complexity.” In this new era, specialists will be less able to adapt to change, and generalists will be more successful.
