Running for My Life Summary

The book begins with Lomong recounting his childhood in South Sudan. When he was just six years old, he was kidnapped by rebels and taken away from his family. He and other children were forced to become child soldiers and were trained to fight. Lomong describes the harsh conditions and constant fear he experienced during this time.

After three years, Lomong managed to escape from the rebels with the help of some older boys. They ran for several days, surviving on very little food and water, until they reached a refugee camp in Kenya. Lomong was eventually chosen to go to the United States as part of a refugee resettlement program.

In the United States, Lomong was taken in by a family in New York. He struggled at first to adjust to his new surroundings, but he found solace in running. He joined the high school track team and quickly became a successful athlete. Lomong eventually went on to run at the college level, setting records and winning championships.
