He becomes friends with Guitar, a streetwise young black man, and the two of them get involved in a series of robberies.

However, their crimes eventually catch up with them and they are forced to flee the city. They end up in a small town in Pennsylvania, where Milkman finally comes to terms with his past and present.

The book is set during the time of the civil rights movement in America and explores themes of race, family, and identity. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest American novels of the 20th century.

About the Author

Toni Morrison (born Chloe Anthony Wofford; February 18, 1931 – August 5, 2019) was an American novelist, essayist, book editor, and college professor. Her novel Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1988.

She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993. In 1996, the National Endowment for the Humanities selected her for the Jefferson Lecture, the U.S. federal government’s highest honor for achievement in the humanities.

Morrison was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In May 2012, President Barack Obama presented Morrison with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

She wrote eleven novels, as well as children’s books, nonfiction, and plays. Many of her works are set in the American South and deal with African-American characters and themes. Her best-known novels include The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, and Beloved; Beloved was adapted into a film of the same name (starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover) in 1998. Morrison died on August 5, 2019, at the age of 88.
