The book starts with the introduction of the main character, Swaminathan a.k.a Swami, and his friends, Rajam, Mani, Somu and Sankar. Set in British India in colonial times, the book follows the adventures of these young boys as they go about their everyday lives in their small town called Malgudi.
Swami is a typical young boy who is full of energy and always up to mischief. He is very close to his friends and they are always getting into trouble together. One of the most memorable incidents in the book is when the boys decide to run away from home after Swami’s mother scolds him for coming home late.
They end up spending a night in the jungle and are terrified by the sounds of the animals. In the end, they are found by their parents and are brought back home safe and sound.

About the Author
R. K. Narayan full name Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami was an Indian writer known for his works set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi.
He was born in Madras, India on October 10, 1906. His father was a headmaster and he was educated at a number of schools, including the Christian Mission School in Madras, before going to Mysore to study at Maharaja’s College.
After graduating from college, Narayan worked for a time as a journalist with The Hindu and as an accountant before turning to write full-time.
Narayan’s first novel, Swami and Friends, was published in 1935. It was followed by a number of other novels set in Malgudi, including The Bachelor of Arts (1937), The English Teacher (1945), and Waiting for the Mahatma (1955).
