The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a novel by Sherman Alexie about Arnold Spirit Jr., a 14-year-old boy from the Spokane Indian Reservation who decides to attend an all-white high school off of the reservation. The book told from Junior’s perspective, chronicles his struggles as he tries to fit in and succeed at a school that is both alien and hostile to him.
Junior, or Arnold as he prefers to be called, is an outcast on the reservation. He is teased mercilessly by his classmates for having gigantic heads, watery eyes, and freckles. In addition, he stutters badly and has been told by the tribal elders that he is destined to be a failure.
Despite all of this, Arnold is determined to get off the reservation and make something of himself. He knows that the only way to do this is through education, so he asks his parents to send him to Reardan High School, an all-white school 22 miles away from the reservation.
Arnold’s decision to leave the reservation is met with a lot of resistance, both from his parents and from the other members of his tribe. Many people believe that he is betraying his people by leaving, but Arnold is determined to prove them wrong.

About the Author
Sherman Alexie is a Spokane-Coeur d’Alene-American novelist, short story writer, poet, and filmmaker. His writings draw on his personal experiences as a modern Native American.
He was born in October 1966 and grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington. He has been awarded the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. In 2007, he was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
Alexie attended Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington, and then graduated from Reardan High School in 1984. Alexie received his Associate of Arts degree from Spokane Community College in 1986. He enrolled at Washington State University, where he studied American studies and creative writing. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies in 1993.
Alexie’s first book, The Business of Fancydancing, was published in 1992. It is a collection of poems about life on the Spokane Indian Reservation. His first novel, Reservation Blues, was published in 1995. It tells the story of a group of Native American musicians who sell their souls to the devil in order to succeed in the music industry.
