The Lovely Bones Summary

The story begins on the day of Susie’s death, December 6, 1973. She is walking home from school through a cornfield when she is raped and murdered by George Harvey, a serial killer who lures girls into his underground home. Susie’s soul enters the “in-between” world, a limbo where she can observe the events taking place in the real world but cannot interact with them. While in the in-between world, Susie becomes friends with a boy named Buckley Angel, who also died young.

As the months go by, Susie’s family and friends struggle to cope with her death. Her younger sister, Lindsey, grows distant from their parents as she tries to deal with her grief in her own way. Susie’s father, Jack, becomes obsessed with finding her killer, while her mother, Abigail, descends into alcoholism. Susie’s best friend, Ruth, becomes a promiscuous teenager as she tries to fill the void left by Susie’s death.

Meanwhile, George Harvey continues to live his life as if nothing has happened. He even attends Susie’s funeral, where he sees how much pain he has caused and is briefly overcome with remorse. However, he quickly resumes his normal behavior and continues to stalk other girls.

Susie’s ghost eventually comes to terms with her death and decides to move on to the next world. As she is about to leave, she sees George Harvey stalking a young girl named Holly. Susie intervenes and helps Holly escape, before finally moving on to the next world.
