The book starts off introducing the reader to the two main characters: Bruno, a nine-year-old German boy, and Shmuel, an eight-year-old Jewish inmate of a concentration camp. The novel shows how their friendship develops across the fence that divides them.
When his family is forced to move from Berlin to Poland due to his father’s new job, Bruno is eager to make friends in his new surroundings. One day, while exploring the area, he comes across Shmuel and a barbed wire fence that separates them. Unbeknownst to Bruno, this fence divides the Auschwitz concentration camp from the outside world.
The friendship between Shmuel and Bruno grows stronger despite the fact that they have little in common and cannot communicate well. They meet regularly on Bruno’s side of the fence, where Bruno gives Shmuel pieces of food he has saved from mealtimes.

About the Author
John Boyne is an Irish novelist who has written numerous books, but the one he is best known for is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. He was born on 30th April 1971 in Dublin, Ireland, and studied English literature at Trinity College.
He then went on to become a full-time writer, publishing his first novel, The Thief of Time, in 2002. This was followed by several other novels and short stories, including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas which was published in 2006.
John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, and is the oldest of five children. Growing up, he loved to read, particularly the classics such as Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist and Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. His passion for writing began when he was only 11 years old. He spent his spare time writing short stories which were published in several local newspapers.
John Boyne has since gone on to become an accomplished author, writing both adult and children’s novels. He is a New York Times bestseller and his book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has been made into a major motion picture starring David Thewlis and Vera Farmiga.
