The Forty Rules of Love Summary

The book starts with Ella, a mother of two and a reader who is in need of excitement in her life. She meets a man named Ozgur, who introduces her to Sufism, and she is immediately taken by the religion and its message of love. Ozgur tells her that in order to truly understand Sufism, she must read Rumi’s work, and so she begins reading his poetry. She is amazed by the power of his words and the way they make her feel.

As she continues to read, she starts to notice changes in herself. She becomes more patient with her children, more loving towards her husband, and overall just happier. She begins to see the beauty in the world around her that she had been missing before.

Eventually, she comes to Ozgur’s house to meet him and thank him for introducing her to Sufism. It is there that she learns that he is actually a Sufi teacher, and has been teaching the Forty Rules of Love to his students. She is amazed that she was able to connect with his words so deeply without even knowing that they were about Sufism.
