About the Author
Mario Puzo was an Italian-American author and screenwriter, best known for his 1969 novel The Godfather.
Puzo was born in 1920 in New York City to a family of Italian immigrants. He dropped out of high school at age 17 and joined the United States Army Air Forces.
After World War II, Puzo attended City College of New York on the G.I. Bill, where he majored in English and wrote for the school newspaper. He then worked as a journalist and freelance writer before selling his first screenplay, The Fortunate Pilgrim, in 1968.
In an interview, Puzo once said, “I never wanted to be a writer. I just wanted to make some money so I wouldn’t have to get a job.” Puzo’s other works include The Godfather Returns, The Sicilian, and Omerta. He died in 1999 at the age of 78.
