The Hundred Dresses Summary

The book starts off with Wanda Petronski, a poor Polish girl who wears the same faded blue dress to school every day. Maddie, Peggy, and Ruth are three mean girls in her class who make fun of her. One day, Wanda tells the girls she has one hundred dresses at home, even though she really doesn’t. The girls don’t believe her, but Wanda insists she does.

The next day, Maddie, Peggy, and Ruth come to school wearing dresses just like the ones Wanda always wears. They make fun of her again, saying she must have copied their dresses. Wanda gets mad and tells them off. The girls are embarrassed and apologize to Wanda.

Later, Wanda stops coming to school. The girls find out she moved away because her family is too poor to keep her in school. They feel bad and wish they had been nicer to her. Maddie even tries to find Wanda so she can apologize, but she’s nowhere to be found.
