The Ickabog Summary

The book starts with the story of two poor weavers, who live in a small cottage near the edge of a large forest. They have a baby girl, whom they named Ickabog. When Ickabog is three years old, her father goes into the forest to find firewood, and he is never seen again. This leaves the family very poor, and Ickabog’s mother is forced to take in lodgers to make ends meet.

One day, when Ickabog is seven years old, she finds a beautiful golden ball in the forest. She takes it home to show her mother, but her mother tells her to put it back where she found it, as it is sure to bring them nothing but trouble. Ickabog reluctantly does as she is told, but she can’t forget the ball and secretly visits it every day, playing with it in the forest.

One day, while she is playing with the ball, Ickabog is seen by a group of soldiers who are out hunting for rebels. They mistake her for a rebel and try to capture her, but she manages to escape. When she gets home, she tells her mother what happened and shows her the soldiers’ uniforms that she took off them while she was escaping. Her mother is very worried and decides they must leave their home immediately and go into hiding.
