About the Author

Upton Sinclair was an American author who wrote more than 90 books in many different genres. He is perhaps best known for his novel The Jungle, which exposed the horrific conditions in the meatpacking industry in the early 20th century.

The Jungle

Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 20, 1878. His father was a liquor salesman and his mother was a strict Baptist. Sinclair grew up in poverty and dropped out of high school to help support his family. He later worked as a journalist and gained a reputation for being a muckraker, or someone who exposed corruption and injustice.

In 1906, Sinclair published The Jungle, which was based on his own experiences working in the meatpacking industry in Chicago. The book was a huge success, selling more than a million copies. It also helped to bring about reforms in the food industry, including the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Sinclair continued to write and publish novels throughout his life. He died on November 25, 1968, at the age of 90.
