The Lieutenant Summary

The book starts in 1788, when Daniel Rooke, a young lieutenant in the Royal Navy, arrives in New South Wales. He is assigned to conduct the first astronomical survey of the night sky in Australia by his commanding officer, Governor Arthur Phillip. Rooke embarks on this task with enthusiasm but soon finds himself confronting some of the fundamental tensions and complexities of the colony.

The Lieutenant follows Rooke’s journey as he attempts to reconcile his scientific ambition with the realities of life in a new land. He finds himself torn between his loyalty to Phillip, who he respects and admires, and his growing admiration for the indigenous people of Australia. This tension is compounded by his own feelings of alienation from both the settlers and the local people.

The novel also explores Rooke’s inner life as he struggles to make sense of his place in the colony. Through a series of flashbacks, readers learn about Rooke’s past and the events that led him to embark on this new path in life. Alongside his scientific work, he becomes increasingly involved in the lives of the people around him and learns to appreciate the beauty of the land in which he now lives.
